Oakland County Farm Bureau\, Michigan’s oldest County Farm Bureau\, is proud to help bring this exciting contest to the Michigan State Fair.\nTo clarify: Oakland County Farm Bureau will pay for 1 exhibitor entry (which includes 1 exhibitor pass) and the contest entry for 1 pumpkin.\nIn order to prepare for the number of pumpkins that are coming to the fair\, exhibitors will still be required to send in an entry form to the Michigan State Fair.\nGiant Pumpkin Division Terms & Conditions:\nRules:\n1. Please read the Michigan State Fair Terms & Conditions. This contest is also under the sanction of the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth (GPC). Exhibitors\, please read and follow GPC rules. It is the responsibility of the exhibitor to be familiar with and understand all terms and conditions concerning exhibition.\n2. The Specimens must be grown and cared for by the exhibitor. Growers from any state can compete.\n3. Specimens that have been previously weighed at a weigh-off contest other than the Michigan State Fair’s will not be eligible for the Michigan State Fair Competition.\n4. Each specimen must be sound\, healthy and undamaged. Entries must be free of rot\, holes and/or cracks through to the interior cavity\, chemical residues and serious soft spots. Cracks\, holes and openings shall be free of any foreign material. The judges will probe any crack\, hole or opening into the specimen which visually appears to extend into the interior cavity. A 36” by 1/16” probe will be provided to the judge to probe any suspect cracks\, openings or holes. An opening where the probe meets no resistance into the interior cavity will disqualify the specimen from the completion. The decision of the judges is final.\n5. Chemical residues and soil must be cleaned from the specimen before arrival at the Michigan State Fair for the protection of judges\, lifters and spectators.\n6. The judges have the right to fully inspect each specimen before the official weight is announced. Refusal to allow a thorough inspection of the specimen will result in disqualification.\n7. Specimens must clear the scale in sound condition in order for the weight to be official and grower eligible for prize money.\n8. In the event of ties\, the prize money for that placing and the placing below will be combined and split equally.\n9. Exhibitor wishing to retain their pumpkin must state so at time of weigh in. All others become the property of the Michigan State Fair. The top 5 placing pumpkins will remain on display at the MSF until Monday September 1st at 3pm. If the exhibitor is not there at that time\, the State Fair has the right to remove the pumpkin. All other pumpkins will be released after weigh in.\n10. Prize money will be awarded based on each entry clearing inspection and weight.\n11. NEW THIS YEAR: ADITIONAL GIANT VEGETABLE CONTEST FOR FIELD PUMPKINS\, SQUASH\, LONG GOURDS AND TOMATOES. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, September 5\, the Old Washington Farmer’s Market will host an official watermelon weigh-off site for the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth in Washington\, Arkansas. The Great Pumpkin Commonwealth provides official venues for growers to weigh several varieties of fruit and vegetables\, including watermelons\, across the country. They then give prizes for the largest weighed item of its type across the country.\nThis official weigh off event will be for watermelons ONLY. Prizes will be given out for the top three largest watermelons. First Place – $800\, Second Place\, — $600\, and Third Place — $500.\nA Youth category will also be included for watermelon growers that are 14 years of age and younger. Prizes for youth are as follows: First Place — $100\, Second Place — $75\, and Third Place — $50.\nOnly one official entry will be considered per farmer or team. Preregistration is not required for the event. The official weigh-off will begin around 11am. The event will take place behind the City Hall of Washington\, Arkansas across the street from Williams’ Tavern Restaurant of Historic Washington State Park. DESCRIPTION:Wild & Wonderful Weigh-Off \nWEIGH-OFF RULES\n1. Specimens must have been grown and cared for by the exhibitor.\n2. Exhibitor (grower) must be present the day of the weigh-off.\n3. Exhibitors are permitted to have one official and one exhibition fruit entry per category. Only one entry per household of the same type will be eligible for prize money.\n4. Pumpkin Color: All fruit\, not solid green or gray per GPC rules\, will be judged as a pumpkin.\n5. Specimens must be sound\, healthy and undamaged. Entries must be free of rot\, holes/cracks through to the cavity\, chemical residue and serious soft spots as described in detail in the GPC rules located here:\nhttps://gpc1.org/about/rules/ Leaking fruit will be disqualified.\n6. No foreign material is permitted. Vines must be trimmed to one inch from the stem of the fruit. The judges reserve the right to fully inspect each specimen before the weigh-off begins and before the weight is announced and becomes official.\n7. In the event of a tie\, the prize money for those places will be combined and split equally.\n8. The decisions of the judges are final.\n9. The weigh off takes great care in the receiving and placement of entries; however\, the weigh off and fruit handlers are not responsible for accidental damage to entries.\n10. A pumpkin must weigh no less than 500lbs to qualify for the Howard Dill Award.\n11. Watermelons must weigh no less than 75lbs to qualify for prize premiums. \nThe weigh off will take place on Saturday\, September 19th at 9:00 am at the Craigsville Foodland. It is to run in conjunction with the annual Craigsville Fall Festival. The weigh off will be officiated and co-sponsored by the Mountain State Giant Growers club (MSGG). Exhibitors will have until 8:00am to have their pumpkins and other GPC recognized fruit in place. Officials of the MSGG Club will invite different media outlets to be present to cover the event. Awards will be given to the first through tenth place\, along with the Howard Dill award for the most attractive Giant Pumpkin exhibited. The largest green squash will receive a bonus award along with the place premium.
